Save Money and Eat Healthier with Beans and Rice
There is a reason beans and rice have long been staples in households across the world. They are inexpensive, packed full of protein and fiber, and are bland enough to go in just about any kind of dish you can imagine. Both beans and rice have several delicious varieties to choose from, so you can often find a type that everyone in the house will enjoy.
As far as nutrition, both beans and rice have two things most of us do not get enough of: protein and fiber. Fiber is especially important for digestive health, and all too often, we are not able to get enough in our modern diets. Brown rice is even proven to reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes, a disease that is taking over our country.
Beans and rice are also very inexpensive. At our local grocery, we can get a 25-pound bag of beans, any variety, for between $20-$25. One pound of beans feeds our family of four for two dinners. At just $1 per pound, that’s a cheap and tasty way to eat. We buy our rice, an organic brown variety, in 15-pound bags at Costco for about $20.
Being both versatile and delicious, you can make a different meal every night of the week with both of those ingredients, and enjoy not only the tremendous cost savings over processed food, but also the health benefits of high fiber and protein.
Take the money you save and use it to buy extra servings of fruits and vegetables, and you will probably be able to feel the difference in your health, especially if you have been relying on a lot of processed foods.
